The average Pokémon card price is misleading

The mean price of a Pokémon card in our dataset is $48.81. The median is $2.69, about 18x lower. Both numbers are correct, and only one of them describes the card you just pulled.

That gap is the whole shape of the hobby. A few hundred chase cards carry enough value to drag the average into the tens of dollars, while most of the printed population sits close to bulk. Any headline claiming the "average" card is worth $48.81 is quoting the mean of a distribution that has no meaningful middle.

What a PSA 10 is actually worth

Across the 13,646 cards where we hold both a raw price and a PSA 10 price, the median PSA 10 sells for 13.5x the ungraded card, at a median of $115.51.

The multiple is the number worth internalising, because grading costs are flat while the premium is proportional. A 13.5x multiple on a $2.69 card is still under a dollar of upside. The premium only pays on cards that already carry value, which is the opposite of how most submission decisions get made.

PSA has graded 9,812,133 Pokémon cards to a 10 across the 10,409 cards in our set with population data, and we hold real graded sales history for 15,852 cards.

Methodology

Computed over 58,200 card records in 379 Pokémon sets, the same dataset behind our Pokémon card price pages.
Price statistics use the 52,716 cards carrying a raw price above zero. Cards with no price are excluded rather than counted as zero, which would drag every average down.
Sealed product is excluded. 1,248 rows for booster boxes, elite trainer boxes, blisters and tins are dropped before anything is counted, because a booster box is not a card and leaving them in inflates the average by roughly a third.
Grading premiums use only cards with a raw price of $1 or more. Below that, rounding in the raw price alone can manufacture a 100x multiple.
Population figures are PSA 10 counts as reported for the 10,409 cards where we hold population data.
